However, they may be reticient to do so: without that kind of violence, New Orleans might lose its "magic".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740329519207588961.post-61753746751947826902011-06-03T22:06:43.971-05:002011-06-03T22:06:43.971-05:00Great essay, but obviously any poster who uses the...Great essay, but obviously any poster who uses the term "ghetto" doesn't know anything about NOLA and didn't learn anything from what was just read. It does explain why snowbunnies think it's cool to squat in St. Roch, seeing it as an anything goes ghetto, while we see it as a rough area that doesn't and shouldn't have to be like that, and it saddens us every time someone else gets shot there. St. Roch and the city in general is plenty blighted, no question, but some squatters, graffiti, and the mayhem that gets created, worsen the blight and accentuate the violence, while paradoxically increasing the gentrification, no question. These young black kids are not shooting each other to fight over the table scraps of the rich. They could all be given a million dollars and they'd still be shooting each other. No, it goes deeper than "ghetto" and blaming it all on some idiot who lives in Old Metairie, all of which is intelligently and thoughtfully outlined in the essay. Too bad that the posters didn't seem to understand it very well.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1740329519207588961.post-10232581053448392902011-06-01T14:22:40.909-05:002011-06-01T14:22:40.909-05:00Great article.
